SUMMARY:Webinar: Investigating the habitat suitability of European frogbit in the upper Great Lakes
DESCRIPTION:Presentation Description:\nLishawa will present a summary of nearly a decade of research investigating European frog-bit habitat and distribution across the Great Lakes region. This work has included passive observational ecological studies\, manipulative field experiments\, and the development of several iterations of habitat suitability models.  \nRegister for the event here!

SUMMARY:Webinar: Demonstration of high-resolution drone-enabled mapping of European frog-bit and other invasive aquatic plants in the Great Lakes region
DESCRIPTION:Presentation Description:\nThis presentation will describe how drone-enabled sensing of European frog-bit and other invasive aquatic plants can help with identifying the presence and extent of these non-native taxa in the Great Lakes region. This project is being led by the Great Lakes Commission\, in collaboration with research scientists from the Michigan Tech Research Institute (MTRI)\, who have been working with drones since 2011 for a variety of applications. Based on field data collected in 2024 in Ohio\, we will show how natural color and multispectral drone imaging\, when combined with appropriate image analysis tools\, can create useful\, high accuracy maps of European frog-bit and other invasive aquatic plants of concern to the region. Results so far will be shown for two Ohio sites with European frog-bit\, and the analysis methods based on ArcGIS will be described. \nRegister for the event here!

SUMMARY:Webinar: Opportunities for the biological control of European frog-bit in North America
DESCRIPTION:Presentation Description:\nIn 2024 with funding from U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE)\, CABI in Switzerland initiated foreign exploration for natural enemies occurring in the native range of European frog-bit (EFB). EFB is native through much of Europe and parts of temperate Asia as well as North Africa. It was introduced into North America as an ornamental in the early 1930s\, with the initial introduction into Ottawa in Ontario\, Canada thought to originate from the Zurich Botanical Gardens\, Switzerland\, thus Switzerland and surrounding areas were a good place to start to search for a biocontrol agent. During surveys at least two potential biological control agents have been recorded\, a Hydrellia sp. fly and the weevil\, Bagous puncticollis. In addition to this\, water soldier\, Stratiotes aloides\, also introduced in North America (currently only in Canada)\, will be considered during surveys in the native range given the phylogenetic relatedness and geographic overlap with European frog-bit. In this presentation Philip will give an update on the progress made in the first year of surveys and plans going forward. \nRegister for the event here!
